Updates for UGO 2.0.7

UGO Devlog: The Modern Makeover!
Hey potential future users (and hello, future me!),
This log covers the major transformation of the UGO - Ultimate Gaming Optimizer application, moving it from its original retro roots to a much more modern, user-friendly, and visually engaging experience.
Key Changes & Improvements:
-
Complete Visual Overhaul:
- Out with the Old: Said goodbye to the classic black background, green text, Courier font, scanlines, and blinking LEDs.
- In with the New: Introduced a clean, bright, light-theme interface inspired by modern macOS design principles. Uses standard system fonts (like Segoe UI) for better readability.
- Layout Enhanced: Reorganized the interface with better padding, clearer visual hierarchy, and a scrollable area for the tweak list to handle potentially many options.
- Functional Colors: Added subtle background colors to the different tweak categories (Maintenance, Speed Up, Network, etc.) to give a visual hint about their purpose.
- Title Pop: Made the main application title larger and used an accent color to make it stand out more.
-
Improved User Interaction:
- "Meaty" Buttons: Redesigned all buttons (Presets, Optimize, Reset) with more padding and clearer visual feedback (hover/click states) to make them easier to press and understand.
- Preset Polish: Gave the "Balanced", "Performance", and "Extreme" preset buttons distinct background colors for easier identification. Fixed a bug so they now correctly select/deselect the corresponding tweak checkboxes visually.
- Sound Feedback: Integrated subtle sound effects! You'll now hear confirmations for button clicks, toggling tweaks, starting/finishing optimizations, errors, and resets. (Requires the
sounds
folder with.wav
files to be present).
-
Under-the-Hood & Stability:
- Smarter File Handling: Implemented logic (
resource_path
) so the app correctly finds necessary files (like sounds and the icon) whether run directly from Python or as a standalone.exe
built with PyInstaller. - Bundling Ready: Updated the build process recommendations (
--add-data
,--windowed
) so the app can be easily packaged into a single executable file (with sounds included inside!) that doesn't show a background console window. - Tweak Refinements: Updated some of the underlying system commands for applying tweaks to use safer syntax (raw strings) and potentially improve reliability.
- Logging: Added logging to an external file (
optimizer_modern.log
) to help track what the app is doing and diagnose any issues.
- Smarter File Handling: Implemented logic (
-
Bug Squashing:
- Fixed several critical errors related to styling (
TclError
), Python syntax (SyntaxError
,SyntaxWarning
,TypeError
), and UI updates. - Resolved issues where the tweak list might appear blank.
- Corrected problems with the progress bar not updating correctly or causing errors.
- Fixed several critical errors related to styling (
-
Credit Added:
- Included my name subtly in the application's status bar area.
Current Status:
The application is now significantly more polished, visually consistent, stable, and hopefully much more pleasant to use than the original version!
Hope this provides a good overview of the recent development sprint. Enjoy the optimized UGO!

A big update! Well done, sir. Do you plan to add any indication of the level of optimization that's been applied? I understand this is really just for visuals sake and doesn't provide any unfair advantages to player power, but it'd be nice to have and see. Actually, it is nice having a one and done and not having it hang around in the system tray. What are your thoughts?
Oh, yeah. I forgot to mention, a dark theme would be nice for when we want to play on the dark side of the force. No. I'm visually impaired. White is like looking at the sun to me, but for something like this, a dark theme isn't necessary, I suppose. I'm stuck in contradictions it would seem.
Anyway! Great software, good work, love the look and feel, and the sounds.
Thanks for the reply!
I was losing steam today after twitter shadow banned me for promoting the update haha
And good questions! I do plan on adding a optimizations checker, in fact, a previous unreleased had the feature but I never got around to fully fleshing it out. But when it's done you should be able to run a new button that says "optimization grade" and it will give you a rating and report on based on your current system settings compared to the all the optimizations.
More good news too, a dark mode is certainly going to make its way into the next update, I got you!
I originally made this because I swapped from nvidia to amd and DDU wasn't working so I installed a fresh windows. But I always make all these changes for my gaming pc, which is time consuming, and it's usually months before I remember every setting I changed for maximum performance. So I started writing a script for all the tweaks in powershell then decided to write it in python so everyone could use it.
I'm glad it's helped you out, thanks a bunch for trying my software! <3
Alright I've been working on it all day. Dark mode is working, should check to see if your system has dark mode enabled and auto apply if true. System checker works, figured some things out I was missing before and I even added tooltips! Had to recruit a old college friend to figure out the system checker but he sent me down the right path. Going to bug test it for a couple days on my families systems then launch it if everything checks out. Stay tuned!
Pushed it early, seemed stable to me. It is now available for download under UGO_2.1.7
I always appreciate a lengthy reply from another human being. Thank you. You've put in a lot of hard work into UGO and it really shows. Always coming back with new bells and whistles. It's been a long time I've ran something of a "game booster." And I'm no stranger to reformatting and having to go though all the tweaks. Usually, I can't comfortably stick with a stripped "lite" version of Windows OS's, but I do get the itch. The grass is always greener... Haha! I like and appreciate this tool of yours. It has enough tweaks, it works, has more than one would expect of polish for such a tool and is added to. You might have to go back to charging for it. I'm a bit baffled as I've recently started checking in here to see which unique tools are available. Seems people are pretty quiet in terms of leaving comments, feedback, etc.
I was the one that left two comments on your FREE Key giveaway. I'm guilty. I embarrassed myself because after running UGO (was just a coincidence) I noticed my Documents were gone. It triggered a small amount of PTSD I got from a pretty nifty Windows Tweaker program I used back in the day which, by my own hand, I ticked "remove OneDrive" which Microsoft is at fault for screwing us with moving Documents into OneDrive, etc. and I lost my DOcuments. ANYWAY, it was nothing of the sort this time around. I had accidentally set ALL contents of my My Documents to HIDDEN! Genius.
Sorry. I seemed to have penned you as my pen pal. Hah.
Maybe I can figure out a way to sell... something to kick you back something. I am most curious when reading the mind of a coder, app-builder-er, Github using person. You ever notice how those that code are the best conversationalists with the best writing skills, too? Go figure, knowledge is their power expanding far and wide.
Ah, yes. I've gone for Extreme. It's my go-to, but I forgot to run as admin and then restart. I've just been keeping it running at all times, by the way. I am curious about something but I've already written too much and there ain't an end in sight, so I better force myself away. *sad eyes*
I'm glad you like the update, and no need to keep it running Steven, it's a one and done; some settings may get reverted on restart though unlikely. I do recommend running it after windows updates however as those updates can occasionally flip some settings back.
Thanks to you and your old college friend! I dig it. Looks and feels great. You keep outdoing the last update. Before long we'll be scootin' to the moon, whatever that means. Slide with me down the darkside of the moon? Ok, I need o go back into the toy chest.
Wow. Way to go Twitter (fomerly X) or is it the other way around? Don't know what's worse, the name change or that (formerly Twitter) is apart of the new name. Yes. Thank you for compiling it for us. I don't know how to that! :D
